Blue screen error code 0xc0000001 on OptiPlex 7070 running Windows10 Pro

Hello, my OptiPlex 7070 (Win10 Pro) does not load windows.

The startup Repair tool does not solve the issue.

When I try System Restore, I see the restore points. However, when I choose any of them, I am not able to select the drive and get "You must enable system protection on this drive"

I downloaded the Dell OS Recovery Tool to another PC to create a bootable USB. However, when I entered my Dell' tag number, I get "Recovery image currently unavailable".

I also tried SupportAssist OS Recovery tool. Turned PC on, F12, connected to the internet and downloaded successfully. Automatically started SupportAssist but did not open. Ended up with blue screen (error 0xc0000001).

Runned all SupportAssist Pre-Boot System Performance Checks and all came out OK.

Not sure where to go from here.

If there is no data on hdd you need to recover (other than hidden factory recovery partition) try to build a bootable usb on another pc by using Microsoft Windows 10 download media creation exe.  USB size needs to be greater than 4GB.  When done use it to start a clean install of Windows by pressing F12 and select boot from USB, proceed to install, during install choose custom option, delete old OS partition on hdd, but do not delete factory recovery partition on hdd.  create new partition, format it, hit enter to let it install.

there may be nothing to recoverthere may be nothing to recover

Unable to boot, error code: 0xc0000001, you must install clean on a new drive
using usb2.0 installation media.

There are no soft fixes for physically corrupted or bad drives

there is no recovery
you will need a new drive an usb2 install media and a dock

use a dock to see if you can get any data

Create Windows 10 USB2 installation media

Does you Optiplex 7070 have two drives: M.2 ssd for boot drive and sata hdd for data drive?  If the data you want to retrieve is only on hdd, and not on M.2 ssd, you have the option of recover or reinstall OS on the boot drive without risking data loss on the hdd drive.

understand you prefer to recover OS.

got it. Try enabling system protection since this was the first error you encountered.

open the Command Prompt from Windows Recovery Environment
Select Troubleshoot, Advanced options, and Command Prompt from within Windows Recovery Environment.

Next, enter net start vss in the Command Prompt; and press the Return key.

Then enter rstrui.exe /offline:C:windows=active in the Command Prompt, and remember to press Return.

Restart

Thank you for the recommendation.

Tried it. Started the recovery process but could not finish. See message below.

It only has ssd drive. From cmd, I was able to backup all the data. However, I have a lot of software configured already that I would prefer not to have to re-install. Specially since there are recovery points available, one from this week and a few from last month.

Hi, thank you for the info. How can you tell it is a physically corrupted bad drive?

I ran SupportAssist Pre-Boot System Performance Checks for the drive and all came back OK.

From cmd, I was able to make a backup of the data. However, I would prefer to fix the current windows installation to avoid re-installing and re-configuring all the software I use.

sounds like you made a small progress. now you can start restore but it is not able to complete. I cannot see pic you pasted directly in reply until moderator approves (can take quite a long time). Try Imgur or other photo upload link for faster sharing.  or describe in words what error you have now.

got it.  lesson learned is system restore is not always what it promises to be. you made some progress foray into this no man’s machine world but you could not reach the end of it.  before giving up, try this too.

  1. Open the Command Prompt as outlined for the first resolution.
  2. Type cd %systemroot%system32config in the Prompt’s window and press Enter to open that directory.
  3. Input the ren SYSTEM system.001 command, and press the Enter key.
  4. Then enter ren SOFTWARE software.001 in the Command Prompt, and press the Return key.
  5. Restart and try system restore again

Try this https://ibb.co/YtDCWRH for image.

The message is "System restore failed while restoring the registry from the restore point. An unspecified error occurred during system restore. (0x80070002)"

Thank you so much for following up.

The command ren SOFTWARE software.001 returns "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process"

I Googled your latest error code and there seems to be no shortage of ideas.  https://www.google.com/search?q=0x80070002&oq=0x80070002&aqs=chrome..69i57.2281j0j7&client=ms-android-americamovil-us-revc&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8

There's a couple of videos that seem to be mostly in agreement from the list that comes up (screengrab):

Capture+_2021-01-08-13-59-41.png

The catch is when I see those videos, they're booted into Windows already.  The ones I saw, it wasn't like the error code was onscreen, and then the YouTuber went from there.

You might have to try a few things and see what works for you.  Redxps630 still might be able to expand on the topic as well.

Definitely hoping for a solution here that not only works for you, but I've been involved in another thread that started with your first error code.  Same situation there - user understandably doesn't want to reinstall OS.
